Frequently Asked Questions on ESD Labels

What is JEDEC Standard No. 625-A?

This standard is made to provide the minimum requirements for control methods of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). The complete standard can be found at the link below. The ESD labels specifications are found in section 6.6.3, "The label shall clearly indicate by words and/or symbol that ESDS devices are inside the package and that the package may not be opened except at a designated ESD protected area or workstation."

What are the military standards for ESD?

Intermediate and exterior containers shall be marked with the ESD sensitive devices attention label. The ESD sensitive devices symbol and the words 'ATTENTION OBSERVE PRECAUTIONS FOR HANDLING ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE SENSITIVE DEVICES' shall be marked in black on a yellow background. One 2-inch by 2-inch label shall be placed on the identification-marked side of an intermediate container.

Two 4-inch by 4-inch ESD labels shall be placed on each exterior container that exceeds one-half cubic foot. One label shall be placed on the identification-marked side (or surface), and one label shall be placed on the opposite side (or surface).

Smaller exterior containers shall be marked in the same manner except that the 2-inch by 2-inch ESD label may be used in lieu of the larger label.

Where should ESD labels be used?

It is required by the rule, IEC 61340-5, that all electrostatic discharge sensitive devices and assemblies are to be labeled with the 'susceptibility' symbol shown below. It stipulates that ESD protective packaging be labeled with the 'protection' symbol. The most widely used ESD cautionary symbol is a black triangle with an image of a yellow hand in the act of reaching, deleted by a bar. It is intended to identify devices and assemblies that are susceptible to ESD. It is now correctly used as follows:

• On individual components and related documents to state: "this device is static sensitive: do not touch without appropriate precautions"

• On assemblies and related documents to state "includes static sensitive components: take appropriate precautions"

• As part of a sign that identifies an area where sensitive devices are handled in order to warn all who approach it that precautions are required.

Metallized static shielding bags are designed for storage or shipment of electrostatic sensitive semi-conductor components and assemblies.
